The anti-corruption effort chronology

1956 : The enactment of the now defunct Prevention of Corruption Act (formerly Cap. 65, LOK), (The statute was in operation from August 1956 to May 2003).


1991:The repeal of section 2a and subsequent introduction of multi-partism.
1995: Police Department, the Anti-Corruption Squad constituted. The Squad was however disbanded in 1995 before it could make any significant impact. 

1997: Amendment of the Prevention of Corruption Act (Cap 65, LOK) led to the creation of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority (KACA) in 1997, whose first director John Harun Mwau appointed Director in December 1997.

1999 – President Moi appoints Richard Leakey to head government drive against corruption (DreamTeam).
2001:  The Anti-Corruption Police Unit (ACPU) was created by Executive Order in August 2001. ACPU, which operated under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police took over KACA’s mantle in September 2001 and performed this function until creation of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC).
2003:  Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) established under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act (ACECA) No. 3 of 2003 on 2nd May 2003.

2003 – Government bill proposes anti-corruption commission, John Githongo appointed anti-graft czar.

2003 International Monetary Fund (IMF) resumes lending after three-year gap, citing anti-corruption measures.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was established after Kenya’s President Hon. Mwai Kibaki signed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act on 29th August 2011.

2011: Governments of Kenya, DR Congo agree to investigate illegal gold trade, in which Kenyan allegedly plays a key role.
